You have probably figured out by now that organizing a sewing room takes some work.  At first keep it simple as you attempt to sew.  Your needs aren’t much at this point and if you continue organizing a sewing room by putting everything in it’s place when you are finished you will find that it’s easy to stay focused and happy while you work.  I cannot stress enough that your place to sew should be simple, accessible, and comfortable.  It doesn’t really matter where the area is located – just that you have somewhere to work.

Ok, so you have decided to make something from the list above.  Arrange all materials close at hand and check them off your list.  If you are using a commercial pattern, it’s a good idea to cut it out before you start.  Done checking the list?  Congratulations!  You are already learning the best way to organizing a sewing room and keeping it that way.

LEARN TO SEW!

So you think you want to sew?  Now is the time to learn to sew anything and everything you have ever dreamed of.  Some people sew clothing and crafts; others sew slipcovers and draperies, and many now use specialized machines to create everything under the sun.  Here is a basic checklist of the items you’ll need before you begin to sew.

  • A sewing machine (this doesn’t need to be expensive or even new, just workable)
  • Fabric and matching thread
  • A seam ripper (you’ll have to take at least a few stitches out, I promise!)
  • A good pair of shears for cutting
  • Buttons, appliques, lace, or any other embellishment for trim
  • A sewing gauge (It’s about 6 inches long with a slider on it)
  • Needles for the sewing machine
  • Hand needles for finish work
  • Dressmaker’s pins (to hold fabric together while you cut out your pattern and sew)
  • A pincushion
  • A comfortable chair (preferably one with support for your back)
  • A clean workspace for cutting your pattern out
  • A dressmaker’s tape measure
  • A bodkin (it pulls elastic or ties through hard-to-reach places)
  • A thimble for fine sewing (to protect your fingertips)

There are other items you’ll need to purchase if you decide you enjoy sewing and want to do more, but you can invest in them later.  The list above will be sufficient now as you learn to sew.
